about

Cape Town Hoods is the product of the Name Your Hood (NYH) campaign to unearth creative and functional neighbourhood names in South Africa’s urban centres. It’s about igniting community spirit and creativity to produce user-friendly cities through an inclusive, interactive, & democratic process. As our cities overcome historic design challenges and develop more organically, the need to create delineated, strongly-branded neighbourhoods is clear.

Many precincts in South Africa, whether city, suburb or township, are nameless and house disenfranchised communities. Where New York has SoHo and TriBeCa, and London has Mayfair and Chelsea, Cape Town simply has 'Town' or the 'City Bowl', both vague homogenous designations for a large area alive with multiple unique and vibrant neighbourhoods.

The NYH campaign has enabled Cape Town citizens to create new Hood names such as Union Kloof, The Loop, Little Camissa, Downtown, and Green Mile; (click on the map or the 'jump to a hood' tab to explore your Hoods).

NYH has also just completed the naming phase of the first township it has undertaken - Gugulethu.

Each of the Hoods has their own unique characters which can be explored on their websites. Learn about where the names came from and discover fascinating stories of the history, culture, geography, and happenings around these Hoods.

The NYH has plans to enter other Cape Town suburbs such as Khayelitsha, as well as Johannesburg and Durban. Watch this space...
